Varicose Veins

Varicosities of lower extremities are bulging, twisting, large veins that usually form as a result of faulty valves in certain veins of thighs and legs. This is a common condition that affects 25 percent of women and 15 percent of men in the United States. While hereditary factors are most influential in development of varicose veins, pregnancy and prolonged sitting or standing can often worsen the condition.

What are the symptoms?

Although many patients desire treatment for their varicose veins because of their appearance, most do so because of their physical symptoms. These include fatigability, restlessness, heaviness, night cramps, and above all a sensation of nagging aching pain. Symptoms are typically worsened by prolonged standing and premenstrual cycles. If left untreated, swelling, skin pigmentation, and eventually ulceration of the legs and feet can develop with time.

What are the treatment options?

Traditionally, vein stripping, a surgical procedure utilizing multiple incisions and causing considerable pain and discomfort, has been used to treat this condition. In our center we use a revolutionary new technique known as EVLT (endovenous laser treatment ). Through a needle a tiny laser catheter is introduced into the culprit vein without making an incision. The treatment is then completed with local anesthesia, and application of laser energy to obliterate the vein. The procedure is done at our center and usually takes less than an hour. You can resume normal activities immediately. EVLT is highly effective, approaching a 98 percent success rate. Any symptom related to the varicosities is completely resolved on the day of the procedure. In most cases, significant if not total regression of the large veins occurs within one to two months.

Am I a good candidate?

The best way to find out if laser therapy will help you with your varicose veins is to visit one of the surgeons at our office. Suitability for the procedure is confirmed by a thorough ultrasound examination of the lower extremities. In most cases the procedure is covered by insurance. Spider Veins and Reticular Veins

Spider veins are tiny blue or purple vessels visible within the skin of lower extremities. Reticular veins are larger (4-5 millimeter) blue tinged networked veins in the same region. Both are brought about by many causes, including genetic predisposition, pregnancy, prolonged standing or sitting, and trauma to the skin. While they can be painful, spider and reticular veins are also an aesthetic nuisance.

How are spider veins treated?

Spider vein treatment of the lower extremities and face are effectively treated with our state of the art lasers. A variety of other unsightly vascular lesions such as fine facial veins and cherry spots are also treated in this fashion. Other sophisticated techniques such as ultrasound guided sclerotherapy are reserved for the larger reticular veins. If you suffer from both varicose and spider veins, it is necessary to treat the varicosity first, as spider veins will most likely return if varicose veins remain.

What are Reticular Veins?

Reticular veins are larger than spider veins, and are usually the veins from which spider veins arise. Sometimes referred to as “feeder veins,” they are ineffectual veins which have not yet dilated.

Varicose Vein Removal

Varicose vein removal via laser is a revolutionary new and effective way to treat this condition. Much of the appeal of the laser procedure is that it doesn't require invasive surgery, but rather gentle insertion of needle. The treatment works by sending powerful bursts of light into the varicose vein via a tiny laser catheter inside the needle. Heat from pulsing light causes the vein to seal, and subsequently wither and get reabsorbed into the body. It's important to choose a skilled doctor who has experience with lasers for varicose vein removal. An experienced doctor, like one found at the Renaissance Laser and Vein Clinic, will be able to control the wavelength of the laser light so that it is in tune with the pigment of your blood and veins to allow precise heating. Besides removing the unsightly vein, varicose vein removal will also restore normal blood flow. This is because varicose veins decrease the efficiency of blood flow through mangled valves and blood pooling.

Each varicose vein removal treatment lasts less than an hour, but depending on the severity of the problem, more than one treatment may be needed. Local anesthesia is applied to aid with comfort. Many patients describe the laser vein procedure as a unique tingling sensation that is easily tolerable. Regardless, most patients who qualify for varicose vein removal via laser technology find it to be an extremely effective treatment with little to no side effects.

Varicose vein removal via laser is conveniently performed inside the doctor's office here at the Renaissance Laser and Vein Clinic. A consultation involving an ultrasound of the lower extremities is required to determine if laser treatment is the best option for a patient.

Spider Vein Treatment

Unwanted veins on the hands, face, legs and body can cause a patient a lot of embarrassment. Covering veins with makeup can be nearly impossible due to their dark color that contrasts so much against skin tone. Because of this, many women and men who suffer from unwanted spider veins seek medical treatment to permanently eliminate their spider veins. What was once a difficult procedure has been made easy thanks to the advanced laser technology employed in our Thousand Oaks office. At the Renaissance Laser and Vein Institute, our spider vein treatments are virtually pain-free and take only ten to fifteen minutes from start to finish. In order to target the unwanted spider veins, we use a laser that targets the pigmentation in the vein, sending a blast of laser energy to that pigment and essentially obliterating the vein. During the spider vein treatment, the vein should close permanently, and begins to fade away. Some spider veins disappear from the patient's body immediately following the laser treatment while others might take a month or two to completely fade away. However, the end result is the same - beautiful, even-toned skin unmarred by a criss-cross of unsightly spider veins.

To permanently obliterate an unwanted spider vein, it can take anywhere from a single treatment to three or four spider vein treatments. It always depends upon the patient's particular body and vasculature, although most spider veins can be effectively eliminated in two to three easy, pain-free treatments. The beauty of spider vein treatments is that the patient no longer has to worry about the embarrassment of covering up their body, and can show off their arms, legs and face without worrying about people staring at their unwanted spider veins.
